New regulations that amend the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 imposing a duty on every self-employed person to conduct his or her undertaking in such a way as to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the self-employed person and other persons (not being his or her employees) who may be affected are not exposed to risks to their health and safety.

New report - Held back by Debt - shows that people who were self-employed, on zero-hours contracts or on fixed-term contracts were twice as likely to experience a change in economic circumstances in the last year as those in more traditional, permanent jobs, and that these ‘income shocks’ need to be accompanied by more comprehensive and responsive safety nets to ensure that people can cope with life’s ups and downs.

New research from Centre for London finds that from October 2015 a London-specific Minimum Wage could be set somewhere between £7.05 and £8 an hour and, given that the new National Living Wage will begin at the lower end of that range, starting from £7.20 an hour in 2016, it should not lead to significant job loss in London.
