Client has just been made redundant following an accident. He can no longer do his job. He’s due some wages and holiday pay next month. Is it worth him making a claim to NS-ESA and UC now or wait until he’s had his last payment?

I’m now back in the office and have had a think about this. If he claims today and gets his payment tomorrow, he is not entitled to UC for the whole month. If he claims the day after tomorrow, it doesn’t affect his UC. Correct?

They should claim new-style ESA now (they need to phone the UC service centre to get the forms sent to them) then claim UC after they receive the final payment from their employer. They could set up a UC account and fill in all the details for a new claim now, just leaving them needing to do the final step of submitting the claim on the appropriate date.
