Spouse’s/Civil Partner’s unused tax allowance

During this morning’s seemingly endless commute, someone mentioned that they had just had their personal tax allowance increased by some of their spouse’s unused tax allowance.  I’ve just checked on the HMRC website and IT’S TRUE!! and seems easy to apply for.  It’s only worth £220 net a year maximum, but better in our pockets I suppose.

I missed that one.

Thank you.

It’s called marriage allowance and you get an extra ‘M’ after your tax code

To qualify you have to meet various conditions:

1) married or in a civil partnership
2) both born after 6/4/35
3) your spouse earns between £10,601 - £42,385 p/a
4) you earn less than £10,600 p/a (below £9,540 p/a to get the full £212)

I only know because my (single, unmarried) client has been put on this in error, losing £1060 of her tax allowance
