On Wednesday evening, a Tower Hamlets council meeting agreed a proposal for a 50% cut (~£930,000) to funding for social welfare advice services in the borough. I understand that the provisional decision is subject to a review that will be carried out through the Tower Hamlets Community Advice Network and Advice UK, with a final decision expected from Tower Hamlets local authority sometime in November.

These tweets from Sue at Tower Hamlets Community Law Centre confirm the initial decision 50% cut and here £930,000

A web page to coordinate campaigning against this decision has now been set up, with an open letter to the Mayor and an analysis of the impacts of Tower Hamlets Community Law Centre.

News from the council that there was no decision on the allocation of the mainstream grant at the Cabinet meeting on 7 November 2012. This is due to the fact that this item has been ‘called in’ by the Overview and Scrutiny Committee which met on 6 November 2012.

They say that 24 hours is not sufficient time to give the recommendations of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee the consideration they deserve and therefore this matter will not be coming to the Cabinet at this time. A decision will be published as soon as possible, with no date given.

For the official statement, see Mainstream Grants update - Cabinet (item 7.1), 7 November 2012
