Some very sad news. We just heard that our former colleague Miranda Bayliss died at the weekend.

Miranda was a member of our appeals and training teams here during the 1990s and 2000s before departing for the Office of the Social Security Commissioners, where she was a Legal Information Officer.

While a member of the team here, Miranda contributed several articles that were published to rightsnet in our early days and remained a valued supporter of the site after she moved on, for which we’ll be forever grateful. Miranda contributed to the Disability Rights Handbook and was a checker for CPAG and she will be well known to many of you across the sector.

Indeed, those of you who met Miranda, or perhaps spoke to her on our telephone advice line, will know that while she was massively knowledgeable about welfare benefits law, she was also extremely modest and such a generous person.

She was always happy to share her time and experience with others for their benefit and the greater good, and was a wonderful and kind woman. Miranda always looked out for her colleagues and those she supported, including through the groundbreaking appeals representation project that she ran over several years, helping to develop the next generation of welfare rights workers.

We’re so sad to hear of Miranda’s passing and send our condolences to her family and friends and those that knew her ... but also celebrate the difference that she made to so many lives.

Rest in peace Miranda.

Oh no, really sorry to hear about Miranda, really enjoyed my time working with her and learning from her. Like you say Shawn, she was a lovely warm woman and will be missed.

That is really sad news.
As you say, Miranda was a kind and knowledgeable person and was always seeking the best for claimants. I will remember her support for me as a representative, as an author and, eventually as a judge. She was a giant in the welfare rights field and her influence still continues through those she inspired and trained even though she herself has now gone.
