Disabled Student Age 18 in Supported Accomodation
I have an 18 year old who is in f/t education on a life skills type course. He is due to move in to Supported Accommodation next month and needs to claim UC. Would he still be classed as a Qualifying Young Person by virtue of his age and being in education, even though he won’t be living with his parents and they would no longer be able to claim for him? I have been struggling to find a definitive answer on this point.
Many Thanks
If the life skills course is not part of a sixth form course, then I think it will not be classed as receiving education.
I don’t think there is a definitive answer. From my experience, those in sixth form from 16 to 18 even in special schools would be classed as receiving education, those in Chiidren’s Services Training Colleges or Day centres would not.
Sorry Sara, my last reply may not have been clear. I would hope that he could make his own claim for UC if not in sixth form as he is not “receiving education” when in Supported Living
