single benefit payment plan
On BBC news today:
All out-of-work benefits and tax credits could be scrapped and replaced with a single payment as part of a “radical” shake-up of the welfare system.
Great, if:
a) It works
b) It gives people enough money.
It would, at least, give people with morgages some help in employment presumably.
I don’t give high odds on (a) or (b) personally. Simple looks good from the top down but becomes too generous if too broad a brush is used and too mean otherwise. The result is the introduction of rules or benefits for ‘special’ cases and we’re back where we started.
