“Meanwhile, when a delegate questioned Mr Mowat about whether the IT system behind Universal Credit was likely to be ready for October, Mr Mowat replied: “I’m not going to give you anything other than the official line. I’m not mental.””

That’s refreshingly honest of him.  If only politicians appearing on TV news programmes were as up front.  I can see Paxman falling off his chair with a mixture of astonishment and laughter as I type.

According to 24 Dash, Chancellor would like to announce free bank services for UC claimants in this week’s autumn statement but govt is struggling to get banks to sign up because of the fees issue since the £145m the DWP set aside to develop products was vetoed by Treasury -
