People who are self-isolating as a result of coronavirus to be treated as incapable of work for SSP purposes in Northern Ireland

New statutory rule

New regulations have been issued that provide for people who are self-isolating as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) to be treated as incapable of work for the purposes of statutory sick pay (SSP) in Northern Ireland.

In force from 13 March 2020, the Statutory Sick Pay (General) (Coronavirus Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2020 (SR.No.32/2020) amend the Statutory Sick Pay (General) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982 to provide that a person who is isolating themselves from others, in accordance with advice from the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland relating to coronavirus, is deemed to be incapable of work.

NB - the new regulations will cease to have effect eight months after they come into operation.
