Scottish and Welsh Governments confirm that their respective Homes for Ukraine schemes are now open

Both governments advise that their role as 'super sponsor' will enable refugees to apply for visas without having to be matched to a named individual before arrival in the UK

The Scottish and Welsh Governments have confirmed that their respective Homes for Ukraine schemes are now open.

Further to announcements last week by Scotland’s First Minister and the Welsh Social Justice Minister that their governments are to act as ‘super sponsors’ of Ukrainian refugees under the UK government’s Homes to Ukraine scheme - offering to sponsor people directly rather than them having to be matched with an individual sponsor before arrival in the UK - both governments have confirmed that they are working to accept the first matches under their respective schemes.

The Scottish Government advises that its scheme is now accessible through the UK Government’s online portal -

‘Acting as a ‘super sponsor’, the Scottish Government’s route removes the need for applicants to be matched to a named individual before they are cleared to travel to the UK through the visa system.

The Scottish programme is available as an option to Ukrainians when applying for a visa under the Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme, by opting for the organisational sponsor route, and selecting ‘The Scottish Government’ from the drop-down box in response to the question ‘Which organisation is sponsoring you?’

In relation to the Welsh Homes for Ukraine scheme, Social Justice Minister Jane Hutt confirmed today that -

‘We will also be able to sponsor people directly and people arriving via this route will be directed to one of the welcome centres, which are being set up across Wales before going on to medium and longer-term accommodation. This model is based on the success of the Afghan and Syrian resettlement schemes.’
