Hullo everyone,

Further to the workshops at the CPAG conferences on short-term benefit advances and Local Authority crisis support schemes, I have, much later than promised, now published a webpage with links to various resources about short-term benefit advances: http://www.cpag.org.uk/stba-adviser-tools . These include a standard letter that can be used to request an advance is considered (best emailed to local contacts at jobcentre in my experience).

Would be pleased to hear of any difficulties in obtaining short term advances. The evidence here: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/numbers_of_short_term_benefit_ad suggests that whereas over 200,000 “alignment” crisis loans were made a quarter previously, now there are only 20,000 or so STBAs being made- I think the difference reflects a fall in provision rather than the DWP actually positively deciding an additional 180,000 claims a quarter promptly instead of giving an STBA.

This is worrying and another part of the story in which destitution produced by the benefit system is increasingly part of the experience of a much wider number of claimants.

Ah .. using Internet Explorer 9, the links aren’t there. In firefox, they are.

These direct links will not work, without copy/pasting the entire line:

Martin - would welcome your thoughts on STBAs and re-claims for ESA under ESA Reg 30(3) follwing introduction of MR - see Tony Bowman’s post on 25/9 under the “MR ESA needing to claim JSA” thread [sorry cant do links]. Anticipate this will generate significant number of requests for STBA’s!

How odd. As a part-time CPAG web monkey, I will endeavour to work out the issue and make it all better (before giving up and asking someone more IT literate for help). Thanks for pointing it out.
