This is defined as ‘...hearing loss amounting to at least 50bB inb each ear, being the average of hearing losses at 1,2 and 3 KHz frequencies…’

I failed maths. What do they mean by ‘average’? There are different ways of calculating averages. Which is intended? I can find nothing in the commentary on the regs or the DMG.

Anyone…...?

See the attachment.  Look at section 4a where it is explained.  The audiometry results are displayed on a graph where noughts and crosses mark the hearing loss at the 500, 1000 and 2000 frequencies.  You simply take the average for each ear by adding the three readings for each ear and dividing by three.

Document fails at the end of page 3, before the audiogram section.  (Which reminds me, I really must get a copy of my own audiogram from the hospital sometime soonish)

ha, my specialist field.

add the hearing loss in the left ear at 1, 2 & 3 Khz, and divide by 3 to reach average for that ear.

do the same for the right ear.

then multiply the “best ear” by 4, add the worst ear, divide by 5, and you have the binaural average.

if that works out at over 50dB, and person has worked in noise within the last 5 years, person can do claim for IIDB for NIHL in addition to the PI claim against the employer

(subject, always, to the shape of the audiogram being indicative of noise…if there are no losses in the high tones (4 - 8 Khz) won’t be noise, and ideally there should be a notch or bulge.

if not over 50 dB, person should still do PI claim against employer
