IB Credits/IS and ESA

Can anyone help with this?  I cannot read another reg today..
Client, disabled student, has been in and out of Uni for several years. Claims IS (and IB credits) in the hols and has student funding for term time.  DWP queried the amount of his student funding in Sept 2010, client did not provide info and DWP state his claim ended in Sept 2010.  Finishes uni in June 2011 and was made to claim ESA.  Client is adamant that his credits continued to run from Sept 2010 and only stoppped when he claimed ESA.  He has appealed this.
Query is - assuming the credits ran from Sept 2010 to June 2011, is this enough for a claim for IS rather than ESA?
(Also is there a way I can check his credits without asking the DWP.  I’d an idea HMRC were dealing???)
