I just need a quick confirmation on this. My client is receiving UC as a 17 year old disabled student. His mother receives UC for herself. Am I right in thinking that child maintenance paid to his mother does not effect either UC award?

Child maintenance payments are disregarded as income in UC so will not affect either of the claims.

I believe the rationale behind it is so that the child can receive the full benefit of child maintenance payment whether it is arranged privately or through the Child Maintenance Service .

See section number 16 in the link below to Gov.UK, it can also be confirmed from other sources that this is the case.
