6. Making self understood through speaking, writing, typing, or other means normally used, unaided by another person.

I have a client who speech is quiet and hoarse. He had his larynx removed due to throat cancer and now has a mechanical valve in his throat which he has to cover to be able to speak. He cannot raise his voice or laugh as it just comes out as a rush of air.

We are looking at descriptor 6 with this client.

He can write and type and could therefore convey a message that way.

Does that mean there is no possibility of points in this area??

Thanks in advance

“other means normally used”- eyebrow wiggling is a definite candidate here. See for example Sean Connery or Robbie Williams.

What about semaphore and interpretive dance?

I think he’s OK with interpretaive dance,I’ve been to a number of such shows and I had no idea what they were on about!

There have been many occasions I wish I could communicate to a client in the tribunal room by telepathy ... (Kicking them under the table is a bit obvious)

Thank you Alban RNIB for your reading of this descriptor for me.

Thank you everyone else for making me smile. I would pay hard earned money to see an appeal hearing through the medium of interpretive dance!
