The needs of pregnant women and new mothers have received little attention in public debates about the cost of living crisis. Maternity Action’s recent research has highlighted the impact on women taking a period of maternity leave of having to live with the dramatic reduction in their income.  They have told us about their struggles to feed their families, heat their homes and the negative effects on their health and wellbeing and family relationships.

Maternity Action is the UK’s maternity rights charity dedicated to promoting, protecting and enhancing the rights of all pregnant women, new mothers and their families to employment, social security and health care.

I am inviting your organisation to attend our free Unsupported Manchester seminar where we will look at the gaps in maternity pay, maternity benefits and other forms of financial support for mothers, and ask what we can do to challenge this.  This event has a Manchester focus but we will be running further seminars in other locations around the UK so please forward this invitation to the relevant person/people.

Our speakers are women with lived experience, frontline charities, health workers and others with direct experience of supporting women facing these challenges.

This event will be held on Tuesday 25th April from 10am to 12.30pm at the Friends Meeting House, 6 Mount St, Manchester M2 5NS.  Speakers will include Ros Bragg, Director, Maternity Action, a woman speaking about her lived experience, and organisations working on the frontline to provide the support that these women so desperately need.

There will also be a session for participants to discuss priorities for campaigning and how to influence decision makers to the changes we need.

Update - event is now online -

In order to allow more people to attend we have moved our free Cost of Living event “Manchester Unsupported” to an online event.

The webinar will still be taking place on Tuesday 25th April from 10am to 12.30 and will be looking at the impact that the cost of living crisis is having on pregnant women and new mothers who have taken a period of maternity leave.

In our Manchester focused seminar, we look at the gaps in maternity pay, maternity benefits and other forms of financial support for mothers, and ask what we can do to challenge this.
