I have a tenant who has reached state pension age and his partner who he lives with is working age . They have been advised to claim UC with the working age partner being the lead claimant . The working age partner is not named on the tenancy. The tenancy is in the name of the state pension age person solely . This is because it is an independent senior living tenancy. Social Housing
Can a joint claim be submitted to UC if the working age person is not on the tenancy ? If not what is the procedure ?

Thank you

Hi there,

This is common and won’t be an issue. UC just cares that they’re a benefit household and are liable for full rent overall. On the specifics of the claim, I can’t remember if each member of the household is specifically asked whether they’re liable for rent or not - I think they are.

You don’t have lead claimants with UC, both partners must make a claim and link them together.
