Hello,

Have a young single Mum who is moving shortly from a full service area, where she receives UC. She has one child. She is moving to an area that are not currently accepting UC claims.

I understand that UC normally moves with you, but if moving if her only change of circs… could she end UC and claim IS/HB? I’m aware the timing will be difficult and not perfect and it will close her UC back to the start of her AP, but is it possible?

Yes it’s possible and I have seen cases where it has been positively encouraged by DWP who presumably don’t want too many UC claimants in non-full service areas before they feel ready to cope with them.  Once the UC award has been relinquished (with careful timing as you say) and with no outstanding UC issues pending (appeal/recon) there is absolutely nothing to say you cannot make a new claim for legacy benefits
