trial of new text relay service on PIP claims and enquiry line
Latest ‘touchbase’ edition 113 says -
‘Personal Independence Payment became the first benefit within DWP to trial Next Generation Text (NGT). NGT is a free text relay service for customers who have hearing, speech impairments or are partially sighted. Customers communicate by typing to a text relay assistant, who relays that information to our agents verbally, and vice versa.’
Hi,
I don’t understand how this works, the link for info takes you to the general NGT page which has generic info for businesses etc and suggests that you just need a normal phone and a computer, the .gov site says: ‘Dial: 18001 then 0800 917 2222’ (https://www.gov.uk/pip/how-to-claim ) but if I ring that I just get what sounds like a fax machine? I feel like I’m missing some essential instructions!

I agree Jane, the gov.uk instructions fail to mention you need to first download an app and then link your phone number as far as I can work out - here’s the link to the ‘type and read’ section on the NGT website if that helps.
