PIP -Filtering ?
I completed a PIP form with my normal rules cancer patient early Feb 2024. She reports that she has had a phone call from PIP which asked her about walking etc, and is having an another phone call in the next few days. It sounded to me like the first phone call was trying to sound out from her whether or not she might be SR1, but when I mentioned it to my colleague, she has a client with similar experience. Neither are SR1able.
Are the DWP trying to filter out applicants who in the opinion of the DWP do not have much of a case, in order to cut their ginormous backlogs? Are they trying to work out who might be SR1able? Am I just old and cynical? (No answer required on that one!)
Has anyone else any experience of this?

Don’t know about PIP, but we are seeing with AA at the MR stage.

This seems to be phone the customer as soon as the form is received and looked at - granted this application was not a cert (not that they ever are any more). and if the customer replies appropriately then they get an assessment phone call.
Is it filtering?
From the reports I received from PIP claimants in my last post, I got the impression the DWP was checking which specialism needed to be allocated for the assessment. I figured they were trialling the whole ‘get assessed by a medical professional who understands your condition’ approach. I will add more if/when I learn anything else on this.

26 March 2024 - update on ‘specialist assessors’ trial
‘As the term “specialist” has a very specific meaning in a medical context, the decision has been made to rename the initiative to “Condition Focused Assessors” to avoid misalignment with clinical definitions. The ambition and intent of the initiative remains the same. In September 2023, we began a small-scale test matching certain PIP claimants’ primary health condition to an existing healthcare professional (HCP) with relevant clinical experience. This test ran until January 2024, at which point it was expanded to cover claimants with multiple conditions. (...) Initial exploratory research will be published later this year.’

Interesting if that is what is happening Kelly.
Julie, we have seen some cases where either DWP or IAS (I am not 100% certain which) rings the claimant and appears to do a brief, preliminary assessment of their PIP claim on the phone and then either:
- makes a decision without them attending a full assessment (I think that all the decisions we’ve seen are positive so far)
-decides that a full assessment is needed and the claimant goes back onto the normal assessment pathway
I have no idea if those selected are done so on the basis of them being judged likely to get an award, or whether it is just random.

(It could be that those required to attend a full assessment have actually been sussed out for an appropriate HCP and the people given awards are different types of phone calls)
