Is there any way we can embolden text? I only know BB code and that doesn’t work any more

hi dan -

yes you can ... you need to use pointy or square brackets and a ‘b’ ...

eg <b>

... in front of the word/phrase that you want to appear bold  ... and then use the same behind it, though including a slash in front of the b (to turn the bold off)

hope that makes sense?! .... see attached for an example

cheers - shawn

No the (b) is before ‘except where’ but the (/b) is at the end.

Even ‘except where’ isn’t bold in this browser. I’m running IE9 btw.

It needs to be < or [ not ( .  In other words round brackets don’t work.

How strange! Ah well, I shall continue to use the code in teh knowledge that everyone else can take advantage of the illumination.

does italicising work?,

I can’t see that it does here.

I’m glad to hear that!

I shall be typographically challenged from here on in… Shucks.

Edit I’m doubting myself now so have attached a screenshot for good measure

Shawn - a bit late with this one, but I’ve noticed the odd glitch with phantom punctuation appearing in my posts - seems to be a particular problem with semi-colons appearing after I type the word HMC&TS; - am not sure if it will show up in this post but it does in this one - http://www.rightsnet.org.uk/forums/viewthread/8040/

If I go back and edit there’s definitely no semi-colon showing up, but they’re there in the post. Bit of a pain as I’m a spelling/punctuation/grammer fascist.

If you type in

HMC&amp;TS

you get

HMC&TS

without the extra semicolon.

Only if you’ve got a monk on retainer to do the colouring in for you.

couple of updates:

- re the ampersand issue ..

Ampersands are not valid HTML, so the forum converts them .... it seems to be confused by the fact that there is no space as expected directly after the ampersand, and adds the semicolon when it finds a space.

So we can avoid this conversion by typing HMC&amp;TS as Jon suggested above, or type HMC & TS, or HMCTS (which I guess is what they call themselves!) ....

... or maybe so cleverly contruct our sentences as to always require an ampersand after the acronym!

- re Dan’s issue re bold and italics not previously showing up ... in fact we didn’t fix anything ... the advice we got is that ‘It looks like they are not seeing the site’s fonts, but are getting the Arial fallback. Perhaps they or their network administrator has blocked fonts.com somehow.’ .... so wonder whether something changed your end?

Hopefully this thread has proved useful in being able to flag up issues and gremlins ... has certainly been useful to us in being alerted to stuff

So, wonder if I start a new thread which can serve as a permanent place for being able to flag stuff up as you come across it - and maybe not just problems, but extra things you’d like to see us doing - and we can use it as a way of getting back to you ...

Assuming people would welcome that, I’ll start a new thread and post the link here shortly
