Legal needs of individuals in England and Wales
New report from the Law Society and the Legal Services Board that presents the findings of a 2019 survey of the legal needs of individuals in England and Wales.
Findings include:
- in the past four years, a third of the adult population (32%) has had a legal issue related to employment, finance, welfare or benefits.
- 54% of those with low legal confidence did not get professional help.
- when people are dealing with an employment, finance, welfare or benefits issue they are much more likely to have a main adviser from the ‘not for profit advice sector’.
- the vast majority of adults in England and Wales believe that Legal Aid is a good thing, with just under half (45%) strongly agreeing and another 47% mainly agreeing.
- people are more likely to support Legal Aid funding for domestic violence (71%) and unfair police treatment (66%), and 62% feel that it should be available for crime .... and are least likely to feel that Legal Aid should fund welfare benefits issues (53%) and issues relating to a relationship breakdown (52%).
