In advance of the London Mayoral elections, scheduled to take place in May 2012, the London Advice Forum is asking Mayor of London candidates to support the implementation of a pan-London advice strategy via City Hall. We feel this is important because there are major challenges for London in terms of welfare reform, housing provision, unemployment and poverty, that requires a coordinated response to ensure vulnerable Londoners are able to obtain appropriate and accessible information and advice to resolve their problems

Attached is a briefing document that sets out why we think advice and information services are important, what we want the strategy to do, as well as examining some of the pressures on advice services in terms of falling funding and increased demand.

Please feel free to post any comments or feedback, and if you’re a London agency, please let us know if you could support this call as well as sharing with any key contacts that you have.

We’ve just issued a press release, asking Mayoral candidates to support a pan-London advice strategy.

Almost 80,000 Londoners will lose access to free legal advice next year. At the same time, 130,000 households are predicted to be affected by welfare reforms and drastic changes to housing benefit payments, according to the London Advice Forum, a consortium of independent advice networks and agencies. This will lead to vastly increased risks of debt, repossession and homelessness for vulnerable and poor families across the capital.
