DWP testing ‘transformed’ approach to training of new work coaches that replaces the current 52-day programme with 25 days of learning

New programme will however be followed up 'with a suite of products enabling colleagues to learn in a flexible, digital way', says DWP Minister

The DWP is testing a 'transformed' approach to the professional development of work coaches that replaces the current 52-day training programme with 25 days of facilitated and structured learning.

With the Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey having announced in July 2020 that the government would be 'ramping up' its jobcentre work coach capability as part of it's response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a rapid recruitment plan was launched earlier this month to get 4,500 new work coaches in place by October 2020 (with a further 9,000 to follow by March 2021). The DWP said at the time that -

'... these new expert Work Coaches will be trained in how to get the best out of people and make sure they have the support they need to get back into work ...'

However, in response to a Parliamentary written question yesterday, DWP Minister Mims Davies said that while new work coaches currently undertake a 52-day training programme consisting of 32 days facilitated learning with 20 days' consolidation interspersed throughout -

'To strengthen the ongoing development of colleagues we are also currently testing a transformed approach based on research from public and private sector. This will contain 20 days facilitated learning plus 5 days structured, practical consolidation. This is followed up with a suite of products enabling colleagues to learn in a flexible, digital way, better supporting the continuously learning culture.'

The Minister added that the DWP is evaluating the impact of the new approach and will 'refine and iterate as we go', with testing continuing over the next 6 weeks before moving to the model for all new work coaches.
