Welfare Rights Officer

Organisation: Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
37.5 hours per week
£24,214 - £30,112 per annum
Location: Blyth, Northumberland NE
Deadline: 17 October, 2019

We are looking for a skilled and knowledgeable Welfare Rights Officer with relevant experience to join our existing team based in Blyth, Northumberland.

The Welfare Rights team is funded by Northumberland County Council as part of the partnership arrangements with Northumbria Healthcare for delivering adult social care and community health services in Northumberland.

Our Welfare Rights Officers deliver training about benefits, produce ‘easy to read’ information about complex issues and provide advice and support via our telephone service used by social work and care management staff, other statutory agencies, voluntary organisations and community groups in Northumberland.

In addition to providing this “second-tier” service, they also provide specialised advice directly to people referred to the team and this involves carrying a small caseload. Each Welfare Rights Officer is responsible for organising their own workload and maintaining accurate records.

Applicants must be able to check entitlement to benefits and provide appropriate advice. They will need to be able to liaise with other agencies and make referrals as appropriate and must have experience of challenging decisions about benefits, preferably up to and including appeals to the Upper Tribunal.

It is essential that applicants have recent experience providing advice about welfare benefits and maintaining appropriate casework records. This experience should include all age groups and the full range of benefits. The successful candidate will have the ability to carry out benefit entitlement checks and have experience of appeal preparation and Tribunal representation.

The work will involve visiting people throughout Northumberland, sometimes in their own homes, therefore you will need to have access to an appropriate means of transport.

The post will be based in an open plan office at Eddie Ferguson House in Blyth but the post holder may be required to work at other sites.

Interviews will be held on 4 November 2019.
