We are recruiting for 50 candidates for the post of Fee-paid Specialist Member assigned to the First-tier Tribunal Health, Education & Social Care Chamber, Mental Health.

The Mental Health Tribunal (MHT) is an independent judicial body that covers the whole of England and is responsible for deciding upon the necessity for the continued compulsory detention of mentally disordered patients in the hospital or the continuation of a conditional discharge, guardianship, or a community treatment order.

A MHT panel is composed of three members including one Legal Member (a Tribunal Judge), one Medical Member (a consultant psychiatrist) and one fee-paid Specialist Member.

The Specialist Member is expected to have experience in social care and risk management involving mentally disordered individuals and to ‘represent the informed Member of the general public’. They will provide a specialist view both during the hearing itself and in subsequent deliberations and decision-making. Specialist Members use their professional experience and specialist knowledge to pro-actively examine the evidence, ask questions during the hearings, and contribute fully to the deliberations and the decision-making process both orally and in writing.
