Home Office Minister Chris Philp announced yesterday in parliament that -

with effect from 15 June, the asylum support rate will be increased by 5%, from £37.75 a week up to £39.60 a week.

In addition, the government has confirmed increased funding to support local authorities providing ongoing support to unaccompanied asylum-seeking children leaving care -

The new rate (£240 per person per week) replaces the previous rates of £150 and £200 per week, representing a 20-60% increase.

There will also be a targeted 25% uplift in funding for local authorities across the UK who are currently looking after the highest numbers of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children when compared to their child population. They will receive a tariff of £143 per child per night instead of the standard rate of £114 per child per night.

Asylum support increases by 26 pence a day. It’s insulting.

This is the letter explaining the increase from Chris Philp MP. Apparently ONS data shows that the poorest 10% of people (he calls them something else) spend £3.78 p/d on food and £1.78 p/d on clothes, toiletries, household cleaning products, non-prescription medicines, travel and communication. And if that is enough for them…

... that increase was interim, as a result of Covid…. the Home Office have now issued new regulations after undertaking its 2020 review process which, from 22 February, set Asylum Support at £39.63 per week, 3 pence a week more than the interim figure.
