The Chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights, Harriet Harman MP, said:

“Times of national crisis call for strong and decisive leadership. However, at this time, it is also vitally important that checks and balances are in place to ensure that human rights are not disregarded, and that people remain fully protected under the law.

The Committee will be thoroughly scrutinising the measures taken and any proposed legislation. The government needs to protect the right to life and at the same time consider the impact on human rights as it strives to protect the country in this unprecedented time.”

Holyrood Committee also launching inquiry into equality and human rights impact of COVID-19 -

The Scottish Parliament’s Equalities and Human Rights Committee is gathering views to inform an inquiry into the effects of the virus and the response to it by the Scottish Government and other public bodies.

Its inquiry will seek to identify which groups and individuals are disproportionately affected by Covid-19 and the response to the pandemic.

Views on what the Scottish Government and other regulatory or oversight bodies need to do to ensure that actions taken minimise any negative effects on equality and human rights are sought to inform the Committee’s scrutiny.
