I have volunteer experience primarily helping people complete forms, especially PIP. Since October I have been studying MRes Digital Civics at Open Lab in Newcastle University, and have just returned to volunteering and also to undertake my course project.

As part of my research, I would like to learn about other advisors’ expertise and experiences of helping people make PIP claims, especially if they have used anything to assist clients prepare (such as diaries). If anyone would be able to discuss this with me in the form of an interview, I would be glad to hear from you. This would form part of my research data; I will provide a briefing and share the results of my research subsequently.

Kind regards

Colin

As a brief follow-up to this, we co-designed and trialled a physical-digital hybrid PIP diary to help claimants prepare for advisor-assisted form-filling appointments. See attached photo, and information, materials and guides at https://www.pipkit.org.uk/

These “PIP Kit” diaries are intended to aid discussion, to help information sharing and to contribute to building better claim arguments during appointments, not to collect exact material/answers to specific PIP questions. Quite a lot of the focus is on helping get to grips with effect variability and frequency, but the camera component provides a way to document aids, and help discussion about topics such as washing, bathing and using the toilet.

It was hoped these free materials might be used by others, but given the assumption of face-to-face appointments, this is not currently possible. Consequently, the tools are being re-worked to enable the diary modules and components to be generated digitally by home or office-based advisors, which can then be utilised by remote claimants either online or on paper, digitally printed and posted using a direct mail service.

PIP Kit modules and components are only meant to complement, not replace, existing service provision, so the following helpful PIP materials posted to the “COVID-19: Benefit claims and administration” discussion thread will also be very useful in combination.

I’ve just finished creating this document which mimics the PIP2 form from Q2 through to Q15. We’re now using this document to complete PIP2 forms over the phone and then either a) send to the client to who can then transcribe it onto their form or b) print off and include each page where appropriate. It also now allows us to keep a copy of the PIP2 form on file for when we come to MR stage as we don’t usually photocopy/scan the forms. Feel free to use/circulate as you see fit. ... If anyone can give feedback on this “PIP Kit as a Service” or wants to trial it, please let me know. It will be available online, but the code will also be available open source for organisations to deploy themselves.
