Hi

Client today had multiple issues, and a tendancy to quote European law. So when he said that he’d seen on gov. UK that he should be getting housing costs as an owner occupier I assumed he was just talking mortgage interest. But I then found this:

“Living in a property you own
If you or your partner own the home you live in and you’re eligible for Universal Credit, you could get a Universal Credit payment. This includes if you live in a shared ownership property.

You need to have been on benefits for 39 weeks without any breaks.

The payment could help pay any of the following:

the cost of buying your property
home insurance
repairs and maintenance”

Later, under Support for mortgage interest (SMI) :

“You might also be able to get Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) if you have been on benefits for 39 weeks without any breaks” .

This makes no sense to me. In the end I congratulated client for finding it, and suggested he pastes the text I to his journal, asking DWP to explain it.

Can anyone here shed any light?

Wherever you found it needs updating.  One problem with web pages is that they always look brand new.  Leaflets used to get dusty, dog-eared and turn yellow, which gave some clues.

Fair enough. I’ll try and submit an update request to gov.uk
