New Commons Library briefing looks at the long-running debate (since 1990) on equalisation of Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP) payments (paid by contracted out pension providers and broadly based on SERPS) and the recent High Court judgment Lloyds Banking Group Pensions Trustees Ltd v Lloyds Bank PLC and others [2018] EWHC 2839 (Ch) that found the trustees were under a duty to amend the scheme to make GMP payments equal for men and women - a change that is estimated will cost £15 billion across all contracted out schemes.
