Missing work visa

I am supporting an Australian passport holder who moved here 45 years ago, aged 2. The citizen had a stroke earlier this year after working 22 years with Virgin Media. A successful claim has been made for PIP and new style ESA, however Universal Credit has been declined due to the current work visa being out of date. Can anyone offer any guidance as the new visa would take 6 to 12 months to process? I feel a little out of depth as this seems more about immigration law.
Any help, signposting would be much appreciated.

He sounds like a potentially beneficiary of the Windrush scheme:

My grandad applied and it was quick, painless and free.

Failing that, he will need immigration advice from a local provider. CABx can provide basic immigration advice for free otherwise there may be local law centres or solicitors who can help. Be careful though as there are quite a number of somewhat unscrupulous firms providing immigration advice.
