The rather strange letter to the Public Accounts Committee posted last night in the news section suggested that hmrc want to justify why they have over 10,000 more staff than expected (“the DWP approach to rolling out UC” is the reason apparently).

They also suggest 2025 as their new end date; that is another 7 years away.  Some of us will be so old by then! I was so young when UC was mooted! Well it feels that way anyway….

I dont think this letter was required. I read it as a political letter that is politely saying in effect( lets be honest, the UC rollout is rubbish and we all know it wont meet the 2023 timetable. So we need all these extra staff. There are no savings as the recent NAO report confirmed. We will probably be writing to you again in two years to push the date back further so we have set up new premises just in case).

Just my take!
