My grey cells recall that the quality of AA/MA/DLA assessments (& therefore decisions) were no better under the then ‘in house’ Medical Services.

Yup, will make no difference. The real issue is the pressure to gather data and the inevitability of drawing unsustainable inferences (or “lying” as claimants would have it) combined with the cultural resistance of DWP to training staff to genuinely weigh evidence as opposed to accepting HCP reports as some kind of gospel in the face of circumstances where they patently could not be.
