The Department of Work and Pensions has put back harsh plans to change the rules for new claimants for pension credit from next June to sometime next year.

The decision not to implement savings that could lead to tens of thousands of elderly people having to live on half the money paid out by pensioner credit is not motivated by a change of heart on a heartless measure.

It is because of incompetence and failure by the ministry itself to roll out another major benefit called universal credit ... on time.

NB - the June 2018 date appears at para 7.7 of the explanatory memorandum to the Pensions Act 2014 (Consequential Amendments) Order 2016 (SI.No.931/2016) -

From June 2018, it is also planned to remove the option to claim Pension Credit instead of Universal Credit from mixed-age couples making new claims.
