The (usual) arrogant, complacent tone from the DWP in the Graun and Express reports does not bode well.

Indeed, and because Gauke has been in the job like five minutes, the sum total of what he knows about benefits is contained in briefings from the same officials who keep churning out the same old rubbish.  Will his political instinct tell him that quoting from briefings in a sonorous, pompous, booming politician’s voice might not be enough to see off the doubters in this case?

and now Independent & ‘top story’ BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-41433019 I know media will pick up on each others stories but remember you read it here first!

And the small matter of the party conference next week….....

Any volunteers to be a fly on the wall in the SSWP’s office?

Reports via Twitter of comments from David Gauke at a fringe meeting today at the Conservative Party Conference:

- “I am not someone whose political reputation is tied up with Universal Credit”
- qualifies mention of Universal Credit with “current plans”;
- hints at roll-out tweak
- sounds like there’ll definitely be some changes to the roll-out announced tomorrow*

Gauke’s great announcement? Advance payments within 5 days of claim, and in extreme cases, on day of claim.

Could it be these advance payments will be offered and then turned down?

Lets hope claimants get to here of this asn sk for their advance payments to be paid in 5 days or on day 1 , wonder how that will go down with the treasury.  Its a knee jerk reaction of course and when folk realise its not going to solve the BIg Issue, it may come back to bite Gauke you know where.

Interesting to see how “borrowing one’s way out of debt” is now official Govt policy. How many times have we heard Tory chancellors lambast Labour for advocating borrowing?
