Suspension of award due to non-engagement

I am currently working with live service UC in my area, we are not due to get full service until Feb 2018.

I have come across a couple of clients who have had their whole award of UC ‘suspended’ when they have failed to engage with jobcentre. This is seemingly not a sanction, the entire award including housing costs is being stopped when the claimant does not attend appointments at the jobcentre but when they re-engage the award for the suspended period is then paid.

Has anyone else come across this issue and does anyone know which regulations allow the entire award to be suspended in circumstances such as this?

Thank you!

Reg 44(2)(i) UC, etc (Decisions and Appeals) Regs 2013 - if not in contact they can question whether continues to meet conditions of entitlement. Sorta surprised they’re not also sanctioning in these circumstances.

The sanction decisions will come out in the wash in 6 months’ time…
