Council Tax Discount for Carers
I’ve taken a call from a mother who cares for her son’s (receives carers allowance) who are aged 20 plus and “live” in a residential care home from Mon to Fri returning “home” at weekends and holidays.
To enable the mother to be disregarded for council tax purposes the person that she is caring for needs to be resident in the same dwelling as the person cared for. The LA are meant to look at where the cared for’s main residence is and as far as the family is concerned it is with them; they just spend Mon-Fri away.
Just trying to pre-empt the council saying no. Carer’s Allowance have obviously accepted that 35 hours care is being provided (weekends)...
Any advice would be gratefully accepted.
Additional note - 2 sons; 2 carers (mother and father) so 50% discount?
Sorry but one more thing - if both parents were carers that would still leave 2 adult sons in the property so for the discount to apply they would need to be disregarded as SMI leaving no adults in the property = 50% discount. Just read that if there are 2 or more people in a property with SMI that the property becomes exempt for council tax but cannot find this in the regulations…
