Benefit cuts, job losses, unclaimed benefits and job creation for individual LAs in 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014
Rick Jones-Abbas of Denbighshire Welfare Rights and I produced some figures for Welsh LAs of the impact of benefit cuts and job losses following the Budget and CSR cuts. We did this by using the figures produced by the Fraser of Allander Institute, at the University of Strathclyde, for Glasgow City Council in 2003 which found that every £10.795million raised in extra benefits supported the creation of 250 jobs across Scotland.
We took that figure and assumed that losing the same amount of benefits would threaten or cut the same number of jobs.
We used the defensible but rough methodology of taking the LA population size as a proportion of the UK population and then assigning the same proportion of the benefit cuts to the LA.
I’ve extended this by:
a) Taking the benefit cuts year by year from 2011 to 2014
b) Taking the ONS mean of total UK unclaimed benefits for each LA in the same proportion and producing a figure for jobs that could be saved through take-up
c) Producing the figures for every LA in the UK (including the appropriate district / county figures where appropriate)
For interest the UK job loss figures on this basis are:
2011 / 2012 2012 /2013 2013 / 2014 2014 / 2015 Total
UK Jobs Lost per year 54,056 114,492 159,500 91,408 419,456
An example of the figures is

Total Lost Benefit Income 2011 - 2014 £148,169,860.18
