Thought I’d start a new thread for us all to share any new funding opportunities that arise.

I’ll kick off with a reminder of the London Community Response being coordinated by London Funders, with total funds pledged now more than £8 million:

London’s funders are working together to provide coordinated funding to support groups responding to the needs of communities affected by the covid-19 pandemic.

The first wave of funding will focus on urgent needs, though later funding will support organisations to deliver services in new ways to support communities, and to ensure that their longer-term needs are considered by the funding community.

More: https://londoncommunityresponsefund.org.uk

Also, this from Crisis -

Crisis has established an emergency grants fund to support local groups who are financially affected by additional demands on their resources and who have expanded their provision to meet the current needs of those experiencing homelessness across the UK.

Crisis will be making awards of up to £5k for short-term responses to the coronavirus emergency; and up to £50k to fund long-term needs and potential expansion or change in service delivery.

City firms have pledged £85,000 so far towards an emergency fund to save law centres from closure as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.

The Law Centres Network is establishing a Justice Fund to help law centres which, director Julie Bishop said, ‘were operating on a knife edge financially’ before the pandemic. Those who have already pledged emergency cash include DLA Piper and Mishcon de Reya.

Without emergency funding, Bishop said many centres will close imminently. She told the Gazette that several centres have sufficient reserves for only four to eight weeks. ‘Normally that’s OK because work in progress comes through. But the issue is when the tap is turned off.’

The network has looked at the measures introduced by the government to support small businesses. But, Bishop said: ‘We’re not in a position to guarantee to repay loans. We cannot fundraise to repay a loan. We need grants.’ Some staff could be furloughed. ‘But remember, law centre staff still need to be available to provide a service to clients, so they will be working. A key requirement of furlough is you do not work.’

From the Access to Justice Foundation and the London Legal Support Trust:

EMERGENCY APPEAL for free legal advice charities

Legal help provided by front line legal advice charities has been substantially reduced by funding cuts in recent years. Now, just as the need for that help has been dramatically increased, especially in relation to employment, debt and benefits, the COVID-19 outbreak threatens to destroy an already fragile sector. Many specialist advice agencies will close over the next 6 months unless they receive immediate extra support.

The situation is dire. Many advice services rely on legal aid funding. With courts and tribunals closed, cases are not proceeding to a point where payment can be triggered. Half of front-line specialist legal advice centres are now at risk of permanent closure.

Three quarters are facing staff losses. Restrictions in travel mean that people are unable to visit advice services in the normal way. The advice services have adapted to this and moved their services to the telephone or online to make sure people still have access to justice while the COVID 19 crisis persists. That has created a substantial extra cost and further reduced the ability to earn legal aid income.

So the Access to Justice Foundation, the London Legal Support Trust and funding partners have come together to create an Emergency Advice Appeal, an emergency national appeal for legal advice.

We need your support and we will match the first £200,000 donated to the Emergency Advice Appeal.

That means that any donation you make will be doubled and will enable more advice services to continue to help the people most in need.

The Foundation and LLST are combining their experience with the funding community so that together we can ensure that funds are distributed fairly and effectively.

Please give generously, either a single gift or a regular donation to provide vital funding to keep advice services open, staffed, and able to reach the people in their communities that urgently need legal advice.

To donate please visit our appeal page: https://atjf.org.uk/donate/emergencyappeal

Thank you for your support. If you have any questions about giving or how you could support further please contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Thanks for this.
I see that the government mention money for CAB specifically. I hope, in reality, that this money will be available for the advice sector more widely.

Not funding for orgs, but for people ... this from Turn2Us:

The Turn2us Coronavirus Grant Fund has been set up to support people who have lost their income as a result of the Coronavirus and to meet their immediate basic household expenses.

How we can help: Please note that we are unable to replace your income. We are able to provide a one-off crisis grant of £500 per household towards essential living expenses (food, bills etc).

Who can apply: We can only help those who are in immediate financial difficulty due to the Coronavirus. You will need to satisfy all of the following criteria:

- You can clearly demonstrate a loss of income due to Covid-19 (evidence will be required showing at least a 50% reduction in earnings, we can accept bank statements, letter from employer outlining change in employment)
- You are a resident of the UK / Republic of Ireland
- You are not currently in Further or Higher Education
- You are over 18
- You have less than £1K savings (single person) or less than £2K savings (couple/family)

Please note that if you have received a Turn2us grant in the last 6 months we will be unable to assist you.

Wave 2 of the London Community Response has just launched:

Wave 2 has two funding programmes that are taking applications:

- Crisis response – grants of up to £10,000 to enable you to meet the immediate needs of communities, from food and essentials, to equipment and additional short-term staff costs;

- Delivering differently – grants of between £10,000 and £50,000 to enable you to change the way you deliver your work to ensure it continues to meet the needs of your communities, from switching to digital channels to redeploying staff to boost your capacity at a time of increased demand. In some circumstances we may consider grants above £50,000 but there must be a strong rationale in your application for this.

From the Frontline Network ...

St Martin-in-the-Fields Charity is pleased to announce the launch of the VRF - Emergency Fund.

This fund offers vital support to people experiencing homelessness in the following areas:

- £150 for Basic Essential Needs: We are setting a recommended figure of £150 for people experiencing homelessness to access essential items and basic needs. This grant can be requested to help access food and hygiene packages, as well as utility costs and other essential items.

- £400 for Overcoming Barriers to Support: We are setting a recommended figure of £400 for people experiencing homelessness to have their support needs met during this outbreak. Individuals can use this grant to access the resources necessary to stay in touch with their frontline workers during the self-isolation period.

- £1,000 for Securing Accommodation: We are setting a recommended figure of £1,000 to help people to access accommodation, so they can safely self-isolate during this outbreak.

To ensure the Emergency Fund is as effective as possible, we are maintaining a flexible funding approach. As the situation evolves, we will reflect on how we can best offer support through this fund.

Update from the London Community Response:

The London Community Response was launched four days after the start of lockdown, and has now awarded over £11m to support the capital’s community and voluntary organisations during the covid-19 pandemic.

.. The £11m represents over 1,100 grants that have been awarded across every London borough, focusing on priority areas identified through listening to communities and civil society groups. Groups have used London Community Response funding for essential work supporting people across communities - including supplying emergency food packages, adapting advice services and ensuring that rough sleepers are kept safe.

Before coronavirus struck the nation, Independent Age was exploring how to strengthen collaboration with older people and local organisations with the aim of shaping a more active role in supporting communities. But right now, our focus must be directed towards the current crisis. We can’t do this alone which is why our trustees have released £2 million from Independent Age’s funds to help smaller organisations across the UK working with older people hardest hit by the virus.

Our Grants Fund will comprise of four separate funding rounds. In each round we will make £500,000 available where organisations can apply to receive up to £15,000 each.

More from the govt on the £750m for charities:

The “Coronavirus Community Support Fund” distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund will open for applications this Friday, 22nd May.

£200 million worth of grants will be available for organisations who are supporting people and communities experiencing disproportionate challenges and difficulty during the pandemic, and those that provide services and support for vulnerable people and have seen an increase in demand or have lost income. Further funding will be committed and informed by emerging priorities, as the impact of the pandemic on vulnerable groups and charities is understood.

Funding from the Coronavirus Community Support Fund will start to reach frontline organisations within a few weeks. Applications to the Fund will be handled through The National Lottery Community Fund’s well-established funding infrastructure, which they use to deliver around £500 million of grants to local organisations each year. A joint panel set up by DCMS and NLCF will advise on distribution of funding.

In addition, the Culture Secretary announced today that £150 million from dormant bank and building society accounts is to be unlocked to help charities, social enterprises and vulnerable individuals during the coronavirus outbreak.

Article from Patrick Butler of the Guardian on VCS funding.

Coronavirus leaves one in 10 UK charities facing bankruptcy this year

Makes for some very grim reading…

One in 10 UK charities are facing bankruptcy by the end of the year as they struggle to cope with a £10bn shortfall caused by soaring demand for their services and lost fundraising income due to the coronavirus pandemic, a study shows.

The analysis by Pro Bono Economics, an independent charity, says the coronavirus crisis will trigger a £6.4bn loss of income for charities over the next six months just as demand for extra services – ranging from health to debt advice and social care – piles on extra costs of £3.7bn.
