I don’t usually advise on JSA but I have a client who is being made redundant on 21st March, 2020 and will receive final pay on 31st March, 2020. Should my client wait until 1st April to make her (NS)JSA claim to avoid final earnings being deducted or will they be ignored as employment ended before the benefit claim started? No entitlement to anything means tested as partners earnings will exceed.

Many thanks for all advice.

Your client won’t be in remunerative work after the job ends so would be able to get JSA. Their income and capital generally doesn’t matter because its a contributory benefit. So I think just claim ASAP.

As entitlement to New Style JSA is based on NI contributions, I can’t see how the fact of any redundancy payments being made will affect his claim. It’s simply that he must no longer be in full time paid employment.
