Are people finding that the Carers Allowance Unit will not close down a claim at the claimant’s request without the claimant submitting a lot of information much of it irrelevant and keeping the claim open regardless then chasing the claimant for overpayments ie a case of a claimant who started a job which paid above the threshold of £123 pw and informed the Carers Allowance Unit that they wished to close their claim as they were no longer eligible for the benefit.  The Carers Allowance Unit rather than closing the claim have requested that the claimant send them details of first pay slip, pension agreement etc.  The claimant is not asking to be assessed as to whether they can still claim CA but let them know they do not want to claim it and from what date they will be ineligible.

There’s no such thing as closing a claim. The awarding decision has to be superseded. Ergo they need evidence in order to supersede. There are of course many circumstances in which DWP erroneously closing claims on request is advantageous but this may just be them doing what they ought to have been doing all along.
