The eventual abolishment of child tax credits, I presume.

Yes - no new claims to tax credits from 1 February 2019 I believe

Secondary legislation scrutiny committee highlights that some people who were able to claim child tax credit will not be eligible for universal credit - presumably due to different capital rules -

Currently, support for pensioners who have responsibility for children is provided through Child Tax Credit. However, Child Tax Credit is being abolished as part of the Government’s welfare reforms, and from 1 February 2019 support will be provided through Pension Credit. Although Pension Credit will broadly replicate the amounts paid under Child Tax Credit, because it is means tested, some claimants who would have been entitled to Child Tax Credit will not be entitled to Pension Credit. The Department for Work and Pensions estimates that the maximum number of such cases will be around 1,500 in 2019–20, rising to around 2,400 in 2020–21, then falling to around 1,800 in 2021–22.

Also worth noting that working tax credit will not be replicated in PC once UC rolled out and tax credits abolished.

So older workers will lose out. DWP rationale is that there isn’t very many of them apparently.

Is there a date for that Paul or is it already happening in full service areas?

Short answer, I don’t know. Although I seem to recall there’s saving provisions in place so that for someone already claiming PC, they retain the ability to claim tax credits at the moment (as with HB).

Presumably, the change to WTC will happen at same time as CTC.

Claimants who’ve reached pension credit age can still make new claims for WTC everywhere ( AFAICS that’s regardless of whether they’ve claimed PC or not. )

As Paul says, 1 Feb 2019 is looking like the earliest plausible date for this to change but who knows?

( Could 1 Feb also be the changeover date for the mixed-age couples rules? )
