I have a client who lived alone until her 17 year old daughter recently moved back to her two bedroomed property (social Housing ) to live permanently . Client claims UC standard allowance /Housing element ( subject to paying Under Occupancy tax) .and PIP Daily Living Component. This arrangement is to help care for the client for 35 hrs per week or more . The daughter is in the process of applying and transferring her course/ studying at the local college . She is awaiting acceptance ..The course is no more than 20hrs per week . With regards to the welfare benefit entitlement I am aware the client will be able to claim CB and UC childcare element . Will the daughter be able to claim Carers Allowance ? If so will this affect any benefits being claimed ? There is no claim for SDP. The daughter has no weekly/monthly income

You will first need to look at the college learning agreement to see if the course is labelled as full time or not . If it is full time then from the information given above she will not be eligible for Carer’s Allowance. As a Qualifying Young Person on her mother’s claim she will not be able to claim UC herself. Carer’s Allowance can affect other benefits and the Council Tax Reduction scheme.
