Call for expressions of interest from Trust for London: Legal Education of Londoners living in Temporary Accommodation:

Trust for London is seeking expressions of interest from organisations to improve access to reliable information about and understanding of the legal rights of Londoners in Temporary Accommodation. This strand of work is intended to add to the grants, networking and capacity-building support the Trust is providing through the Better Temporary Accommodation initiative, and strengthen organisations in London working with and for people living in TA. Our ultimate goal is that stays in TA should be as short, safe and healthy as possible.

Deadline: Wednesday 14 September 2022, 1pm

New from the Access to Justice Foundation:

Improving Outcomes Through Legal Support (IOTLS)

Launch date: 13 March 2023
Closing date: 5 May 2023

We are pleased to be working with the Ministry of Justice on the Improving Outcomes Through Legal Support (IOTLS) grant programme and are inviting applications from organisations providing free legal advice and support that can commit to using this funding to:

- Support effective delivery of specific services; and
- Collect data and learning through monitoring and evaluation to demonstrate the outcomes and impact of these services.

The funding programme aims to support organisations working to sustain and improve access to early social welfare and family legal support and advice, to enable users to resolve these problems as early as possible and avoid the need for court or tribunal proceedings where possible. Where court or tribunal proceedings are needed, we expect the grant to provide the support needed to help people navigate the process effectively, including where support to prepare for court and at court is required.

Grant funding will commence from 1 July 2023 and will be in place until 31 March 2025

The Home Office has decided not to award £150,000-worth of grants to Windrush community organisations, amid internal disagreement about whether funds should be given to groups that have expressed criticism of the government on social media.

In December, civil servants approved applications from 15 organisations to receive about £10,000 of funding each from the Windrush community engagement fund, a grant established in the wake of the 2018 citizenship scandal.

However, their decision was blocked by the home secretary’s private office, because advisers were concerned that two of the groups approved for funding had retweeted posts expressing criticism of the Home Office.

Govt has announced that an additional £2 million is being invested in the Community Justice Fund.

Administered by the Access to Justice Foundation, the CJF is a joint initiative between Advice UK, Law Centres Network, Citizens Advice, the AB Charitable Trust, Indigo Trust, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and others:

The extra money follows a £5.4 million government grant for the initiative last year. It will enable specialist organisations to further invest in technology to allow remote access to services through platforms such as Zoom and Teams, hire more staff and ensure their vital services remain available despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.

The move will also ensure a greater number of people can access support to resolve their issues more quickly, and away from the courtroom – helping to alleviate pressure on the justice system.

News on the recent MoJ ‘Improving Outcomes Through Legal Support’ grant:

The Improving Outcomes Through Legal Support grant works by funding free legal advice and support services for those facing welfare, housing, family or debt issues – supporting them to tackle their problems before they reach court. It also offers free legal representation to people whose cases do require actioning in the courts.

A new investment of £10.4 million now means that more charities than ever – 59 in total – will be able to reach people in more innovative ways, ultimately reaching more of those most in need of legal advice and support.
