Faster assessments when claimant initiates PIP review

Written answer from yesterday says that assessments happen much faster in claimant-initiated, rather than DWP-initiated, PIP reviews -

‘...Where the claimant requests a review of their Personal Independence Payment award, the median wait is 69 working days as of September 2024. Where the review is initiated by the department, the median wait for a decision that is referred to an assessment provider is 290 working days as of September 2024, and 252 days where it is not referred to an assessment provider.’

I often advised clients (with worsened conditions) who were nearing the end of their fixed award period to initiate a review (by reporting a ‘change in circumstance’) before the DWP did so they could be assessed faster, and ultimately be better off. I didn’t realise the difference in referral times was so stark!
