In Apprenticeship and claim IS?
Thu 04-Feb-10 10:15 AM

Hi I have been approached by a social worker in regards to one of her young people. In the past the YP was in apprenticeship and this was organized by the JCP. As soon as she started they tried to apply for IS on the grounds estranged from family and in apprenticeship. This was declined by the Job Centre they have appealed but was not positive outcome for the YP.

I read somewhere that YP can claim IS and be an apprentice, so I dont know what happen in this case. I am not sure whether there are any restriction as of the payments they receive

Please if any of you can help me I will be greatfull

Thanks

It all hinges onwhether it is a programe led apprenticeship, an employer led apprenticeship or a waged apprenticeship. If it's a PLP and the youngster is estranged he/she would be in a group that could claim IS. In a PLP the youngster would get no payment but qualify for an EMA. In an ELA the youngster would get £85/wk (this may have gone up recently) and would not get EMA and could not claim IS. In a WA the employer pays whatever they choose, no EMA entitlement, no IS. The college should be able to tell you what type of apprenticeship it is.
