ESA
Wed 02-Sep-09 10:09 AM

Hi
I have an ESA Appeal with a man who suffers from Gout. He takes this every 4 weeks, lasts a week and he is unable to walk during that time. He also had a liver transplant some years ago and on continuous medication but no problems with that. He is on Warfarin for irregular heartbeat which again is OK but he has to go and get blood checked every week. Due being off work so often he cannot keep a job. Does anyone have any experiences in clients with gout and capacity for work

Warfarin is not for an irregular heart beat, it is to prevent blood clots and stop him having a stroke, pulmonary embolism, heart attack or DVT. He has probably had at least one of these in the past. The drugs most often prescribed for irregular heartbeats are the beta-blockers, also used to control hypertension , like atenolol, propranolol, and anything else ending in olol.
It is important for regular blood checks if you are taking warfarin as it can cause haemorrhages and is very dangerous in overdosage, being primarily rat poison (makes them bleed to death).
