ESA Limited capability for work- Serial Seven Test(SST)
Tue 25-Aug-09 11:46 AM

My client was given SST by examining doctor and this was used to justify a number of decisions on ESA85.

I understand SST was used in pca.

Anyone know anything, in particular reliability of test

The SST is used as a test of concentration, amongst other things, it appears this was the purpose here.

Can also be used to test mood and for eating disorders, I believe.

it's usually administered backwards. You give someone a (largish) number and ask them to deduct successive sevens from it.

The test is often used in patients with dementia to test concentration. However, outcomes are hugely influenced by basic arithmetic skills and results should be treated with caution.

My client was asked to count backwards from 100 in sevens.

The ESA85 says "he performed well". This seems rather ambiguous; as I presume there is some scoring method.

My general concern is that this psychometric test may be seen as a good indicator and therefore recommended by Medical Services, given the new cognitive element of mental health.

It seems to me that the next question is how relevant is mathematical ability to the prescribed activities, I suspect none.
