WR SECTION CLOSURE
Thu 09-Sep-04 01:05 PM

Norwich City Council, in their wisdom, have closed down their Welfare Rights Unit with effect from the 3rd of September.....

I think a minutes silence could be in order

My sympathy. WR seems to be a particular victim of changes in the wind - sometimes we are heroes and the politicians love us, other times we are expendable. I worked in a good information centre in Govan, Glasgow which had operated for years when Glasgow City Council shut us down in 1997, without any consultation. I survived in welfare rights but I learned the lesson that no matter how good we think we are, our political masters may have other priorities.

I hope that all those affected survive the process. Ultimately the public will be the losers.

regards

Ian Davidson

I take it that's part of their drive for social inclusion, fighting poverty and ensuring their populace have access to quality advice etc.

That's not quite the way I would have put it Andy, but it is a timely reminder that welfare rights is not always flavour of the month.....
